MindsEye, a game that carried high hopes as a cinematic next-gen action experience, has sparked a mixed reaction from the Steam community. We analyzed over 900 user reviews to get a clear picture of what players like and dislike about the game.
Strengths
Despite the overall negative tone, some aspects of the game received consistent praise from players:
- Story — the most frequently mentioned positive point. Over 200 players said that the story of Jacob Diaz, despite some clichés, is engaging and hooks you from the start. Some even compared MindsEye to linear titles like Mafia II.
- Music and sound design — also received compliments. The soundtrack was described as atmospheric and one of the few professionally done elements.
- Visuals and cutscenes — praised for high quality, with believable character faces and cinematic scene direction.
- Vehicle handling and explosions — cited in some reviews as a strong point, almost on par with games like GTA, though this view is less common.
Even these positives are often tempered with remarks like: “Which makes it all the more frustrating — the potential was there.”
Criticism
The most common complaints include:
- Performance issues — by far the biggest gripe. Players with high-end GPUs like RTX 4090 and 3080 struggle to maintain stable 60 FPS. Reports of drops to 15 FPS, frequent stutters, and no improvement from tweaking settings are widespread.
- Poor AI — enemies and NPCs behave illogically, often ignoring gunfire or crashes. Many liken the AI to early student project prototypes.
- Bugs — the game feels like a “rough release” to many, with numerous visual glitches, freezes, and even crashes on startup.
- Weak voice acting — actors sound like they recorded their lines during a lunch break, lacking emotion.
- Underdeveloped gameplay mechanics — shooting feels empty, there are no cover mechanics, you can’t shoot around corners, and side quests feel like procedural filler.
Refunds
Many players suspect the game is designed to push players beyond the two-hour mark — Steam’s refund eligibility threshold. Even so, at least 50 players (5.5%) have requested refunds, which is a notably high rate for a single-player narrative game and highlights widespread disappointment.
Overall Picture
MindsEye is a game where a strong story and ambitious visuals sank beneath a sea of technical issues. Most negative reviews are not just baseless hate but reasoned criticism supported by technical evidence and screenshots.
The game has become a textbook example of a modern “rough launch” AAA, where high expectations fueled by trailers and grand ideas clash with an unfinished reality. As of publication, only 42% of reviews for MindsEye are positive — one of the lowest scores among major single-player releases in 2025.
