Bandai Namco Entertainment has officially announced a film adaptation of ELDEN RING, the award-winning action RPG developed by FromSoftware. The movie is being produced in collaboration with the independent film studio A24, renowned for acclaimed titles such as Ex Machina, The Green Knight, and Everything Everywhere All At Once.
The film will be written and directed by Alex Garland, best known for his work on Ex Machina, Annihilation, and the recent dystopian drama Civil War. Garland’s distinctive storytelling style and experience with cerebral science fiction and fantasy are expected to bring a unique vision to the adaptation.
George R.R. Martin, who contributed to the worldbuilding and lore of the original game, is attached to the project as a producer. He will be joined by Peter Rice, Andrew Macdonald, Allon Reich, and Vince Gerardis. FromSoftware’s Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game’s original director and president of the studio, will serve as a creative supervisor on the film.
While specific plot details have not been disclosed, the film will be set in the Lands Between, the richly imagined dark fantasy world of Elden Ring. The adaptation is expected to explore themes of decay, ambition, legacy, and the cosmic mystery that permeates the game's narrative universe.
The project is still in early development, and no casting announcements or release date have been made. However, Bandai Namco stated that the film aims to “respect the depth and scale of the original work” and bring the game’s hauntingly beautiful and brutal world to life for both longtime fans and new audiences.
Elden Ring launched in February 2022 to widespread acclaim, selling over 30 million copies worldwide. It earned multiple Game of the Year awards and was praised for its open-world design, challenging combat, and immersive lore.
