The remake of the first Witcher has taken a back seat. Fool's Theory got that job in 2022; right now the studio is mostly working on Songs of the Past, the new expansion for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. A small slice of the team is helping with The Witcher 4. Almost nobody is rebuilding 2007 Geralt.
They want the remake sitting on the same foundation as The Witcher 4. Until that game has its tools and building blocks, they are not running the first one as a separate job. Neither goes anywhere without the other. CD Projekt Red said they folded the remake into the fourth for that reason, not because they killed the project. The few Fool's Theory people on The Witcher 4 are there so they can actually use those tools later.
In October 2022 they called it a full remake, not a texture pass. Fool's Theory builds it; CD Projekt Red keeps creative control. It is being rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, as an open world. Pieces of the original the studio itself calls outdated or just bad were going to be cut or redone. This was CD Projekt Red's first game. Co-CEO Adam Badowski said at the time that going back there felt as big as shipping it in the first place, if not bigger.
There's other work ahead of it. Songs of the Past is due in 2027. A remaster of the third game arrives in September; that is a different project, not this remake. The Witcher 4 is aimed at 2028. When the fourth is far enough along, they say they will come back to the first game. The remake itself still has no date.
